Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Program
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.
WIC helps parents to feed their children properly during critical periods of growth and development. The combination of nutrition education, nutritious foods, and yearly healthcare visits strengthens families long after their WIC eligibility has ended.

WIC Chicago
TCA Health is proud to offer the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program to support families in Chicago. WIC is a vital resource for low-income pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and young children up to age five. This federally funded program provides nutritious food, education on healthy eating, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services.
What is the WIC Program?
The WIC program is designed to improve the health and well-being of eligible families by providing access to nutritious foods and education. Participants receive benefits that can be used to purchase specific healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, and infant formula. These foods are essential for the growth and development of young children and the health of mothers.
Who is Eligible for WIC?
Eligibility for the WIC program is based on income and nutritional risk. To qualify, applicants must be:
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding women (up to the infant’s first birthday)
- Non-breastfeeding postpartum women (up to six months after birth)
- Infants and children up to their fifth birthday
Applicants must also meet income guidelines and be determined to have a nutritional risk by a health professional. Nutritional risks can include anemia, underweight, overweight, or other medical conditions that affect diet and nutrition.
Benefits of the WIC Program
Participants in the WIC program receive several benefits designed to promote healthy living and support family well-being:
Nutritious Foods: WIC provides monthly benefits to purchase specific healthy foods that contribute to a balanced diet. This helps ensure that families have access to the essential nutrients they need.
Nutrition Education: WIC participants receive education on healthy eating habits, meal planning, and food preparation. This education helps families make informed choices about their diet and nutrition.
Breastfeeding Support: WIC promotes breastfeeding as the optimal feeding choice for infants. The program offers breastfeeding education, support from trained lactation consultants, and resources such as breast pumps.
Referrals to Health and Social Services: WIC connects families with additional health care and social services, including immunizations, prenatal care, and support programs. These referrals help families access comprehensive care and resources.
